I was chatting with a friend yesterday and sharing my latest adventures i.e. getting my motorcycle license, training for the Spartan Sprint, expanding the business to 3 new locations, being nominated as President and CEO of a charity board…
Several comments were made about my tendency toward “burning the candle at both ends”.
This I pondered…
After much pondering my response would be – no, I don’t think that’s accurate.
I am a Dream Seeker. I choose to Live Large.
Am I busy? Sure!
Am I enjoying nearly everything I do? Yes!
Is enjoyment the precursor to burn out? No.
Overwhelm comes from being busy for the sake of busy.
Has Busy Become a Vice of the Masses?
What is the difference between a Busy Person and a Dream Seeker?
A “Busy Person” is someone who does everything at break neck speed and yet is often just spinning their wheels. They are doing lots of stuff but not DOING anything – not achieving anything.
They have little to no life direction, few goals and if you asked them where they saw themselves in 5 years time they would not have much of an answer for you… or an image that differs little from their life now.
Busy people tend to have little to no time for self awareness. Their lives are punctuated by crises caused by “blind spots”.
A “Dream Seeker” is a person who is also busy; not quite living at break neck speed but certainly at a heightened pace to most. Their life is punctuated with BIG moments – they live large.
They do a lot of stuff too but they are achieving or ticking off experiences they love via all of their “doing”.
They have direction, written goals that they go over periodically to adjust course and their life is based on priorities according to their values; according to what makes them feel good.
Oftentimes, Dream Seekers will shun routine, process and convention because it interferes with their plans to live large.
That’s the differentiating factor – Dream Seekers Live Large.
They live big lives of extraordinary moments. Whilst the moments may not be extraordinary to others, they are so to themselves. That is what drives the Dream Seekers forward – extraordinary moments.
The live from love – if they don’t love doing it, they often don’t do it.
A Busy Person will simply do because they have to, out of obligation or a sense of responsibility.
There is little to no joy in their life, they feel “put upon” and burdened.
A Busy Person is like the proverbial frog in hot water which is slowly boiled to death… mediocrity soon becomes them as they spin their wheels bogged down in minutia that gets them nowhere.
Dream Seekers do not feel burdened. They live a life of freedom – by choice – and they are so busy living and loving their life they have no time to feel burdened or put upon or put out by it.
What is the difference? Priorities.
Dream Seekers prioritise commitments they enjoy.
Are you simply busy DOING a whole bunch of stuff but spinning your wheels?
Or are you are Dream Seeker whose life is filled with extraordinary moments?
How do you know the difference?
Answer This Question: When was the last time you felt you experienced something extraordinary?
Now Answer This Question: How often do you feel like that?
If the answers are something akin to “more than a year ago” and “rarely” – then you’re busy… not seeking your dreams.
Stay tuned for my next post which will help you turn that around – today!
